After about three lessons, my voice teacher said, "Don’t take voice lessons. Do it your way. You’re a song stylist. Always do it your way." Johnny Cash

I respect this quote. I think it's important for people to know that fine-tuning can take away from something's uniqueness.

Today I discovered what colors evoke what moods. Black is one of my favorite colors to wear, so I researched what moods this color stimulates, as well as what people associate the color with. Apparently, black if often used to symbolize evil, and it's an indicator of power. Moreover, purple has been all time favorite color of mine because I've always found it blissful and simple. With that said, purple tends to be seen as a royal color. Furthermore, it has symbolized death and power since ancient times. Since purple rarely appears in nature, it can sometimes appear exotic. Lastly, I looked into the meaning behind the most vibrant color, red. Because the color is so vibrant, it's associated with strong emotions, such as love and hate.

Why is curly hair curly?

In Why Curly Hair Is Curly: You Might Think You Know, But You Have No IdeaGerilyn M. Hayes explains,

"If your hair shaft forms a pin-straight line, kink, a ringlet, or multitudes of bends and twists, it’s all in the shape of the follicles on your scalp. It’s really that simple. Here’s how it works:

Got perfect circles for follicles? Your hair is most likely straight. Even some of you wavy haired peeps have round follicles, albeit they may be more oval than round.

Got flatter than round circles for follicles? You know, the long oval? Your hair strands most likely form curls, rings, kinks, and zig-zags".

When I was younger, my family and I went on a mediterranean cruise and one of the ports we we went to was Istanbul, Turkey. In spending our day in the city, we wen to the Grand Bazaar. Because I was only nine at the time of this trip, I was more interested in being in my own little world than understanding the significance of site. So I've decided to learn about the site today. Considering that, the Grand Bazaar is one of the largest and oldest covered bazaars in the world. It's 30,700 square meters, and it contains over 4,000 shops. It is no longer commercial center of Istanbul, but it well resembles life in Ottoman-era Turkey.

Los Angeles was founded on this day in 1781. It was founded by Spanish settlers, and they originally named it "El Pueblo de Nuestra Senora La Reina de Los Angeles de Porciuncula," which translates as "The Town of the Queen of Angels."

Today I decided to translate "good morning" in 5 different languages that aren't Spanish, French, Italian, Chinese, you get the point.

1. Danish: God Morgen

2. Greek: Καλημέρα Kaliméra

3. Romanian: Buna dimineata

4. Indonesian: Selamat pagi

5. Vietnamese: chào buổi sáng

There are so many interesting idioms that all languages have, so I decided that I would find one that I didn't know. With that said, the idiom I found was "Bob's your uncle". The idiom sounds pretty silly to me, but it's a common English saying. Furthermore, the saying means everything is alright.

What is the role of a queen bee in a bee hive?

The queen's two main goals are to produce chemical scents that help regulate the unity of the colony and to lay plenty of eggs. In fact, the queen is capable of producing more than 1,500 eggs a day.

Why is sleep essential? I know that sleep is important, but today I decided to remind myself specifically why it is.

First of all, sleep helps your brain function properly, because while you're sleeping, your brain is preparing for the next day. Sleep Deprivation and Deficiency, by the National Heart, Lung, and Blood Institute, explains, "It's forming new pathways to help you learn and remember information. Studies show that a good night's sleep improves learning".  Additionally, Sleep Deprivation and Deficiency states, "Sleep plays an important role in your physical health. For example, sleep is involved in healing and repair of your heart and blood vessels. Ongoing sleep deficiency is linked to an increased risk of heart disease, kidney disease, high blood pressure, diabetes, and stroke. Sleep deficiency also increases the risk of obesity".

What are the negative affects of watching T.V.?

According to Watching Too Much TV Is Bad for You, Even If You Also Exercise by Amanda Macmillan, a new study suggest the more time you spend watching T.V. the greater you may be at risk of getting blood clots. The article then explains, "Most blood clots due to inactivity occur in the legs, says study author Dr. Mary Cushman, director of the Thrombosis and Hemostasis Program at the University of Vermont Medical Center. “The veins are bringing blood back to the heart, so the blood has to go back up the legs against gravity,” she says. “When the blood is in a slow-flow state and the muscles aren’t working to keep it moving, it’s easy to see how clots can form.”

Also, a negative affect of watching T.V. is that it can become an unhealthy coping method. For example, Is It Bad for You to Binge-Watch TV Shows? interprets, "Dr. Bea says it can be fun to mentally step away from real life, but it’s unhealthy to use television as a coping strategy.

“Some people will use it to cope with stressanxiety and depression. It can become almost like a medication. This is OK as a temporary escape, but we all need to eventually address the real problems in our lives,” he says".

I'm glad that I've found a negative mental and physical health affect of watching T.V., because, although I don't watch T.V. often, I hope to remember to keep watching T.V. to a minimum.

What's in Kool-Aid?

Kool-Aid has 9 ingredients: sugar, fructose, citric acid, ascorbic acid, artificial flavor, calcium phosphate, artificial color, red 40, and BHT. The article, WHAT’S IN THIS?: KOOL-AID, asserts, "Kool-Aid is basically sugar pumped with enough preservatives to survive the End Times.

So if you want to live a long, healthy life, consider both the literal and metaphorical interpretations of “Don’t drink the Kool-Aid".

Today I learned, On November 9, 2001, guide dog, Roselle, led her blind owner, Michael Hingson, down 78 flights of stairs of the North Tower and to the home of a friend. I was born the year after 9/11, and as I have learned more about this tragedy that frightened and took the lives of those who were born before me; I gain more respect for everyone who who dealt with vulnerability on this unexpected, heart-wrenching day, and for everyone who helped out others who were more vulnerable than they were, like Roselle.

Where did pumpkin carving originate?

Pumpkin carving originates in Ireland and Scotland, because of the legend of "Stingy Jack". Paraphrasing the the legend would do it a disservice, so check out How Jack O’Lanterns Originated in Irish Myth. Interesting fact, before discovering that pumpkins make the perfect jack-o'-lanterns, people used turnips, potatoes, and large beets.

Today, I did research to learn about deep sea creatures that I had never heard of. The first creature I found was the Frilled Shark. The shark lives up to 5,000 feet below the surface, has 300 teeth, and is sometimes called a "living fossil", because it has barely changed since prehistoric times. Next, I stumbled upon the Giant Spider Crab, which measures up to twelve feet from claw tip to claw tip, can live up to 100 years, and is considered a Japanese delicacy.

Who was the first First Lady of the United States?

The title "First Lady" didn't exist until much later, however the first First Lady was Martha Washington, and she was known as "Lady Washington".

Today I researched, "who are the most famous painters this year?", and I discovered an artists whose work I am in complete awe of. The artist's name is Shana Levenson, and her instagram is @slevenson, check it out!  I have never seen work like hers; the details in her pieces amaze me. In 19 Artists You Need to Know in 2019, Trex Lexington explains, "Levenson’s figurative paintings, often self portraits, portray women in ornamental clothing. The attention and skill required to paint the spiderweb-like threads of intricate lace patterns is reminiscent of the focus of the nearly lost art of lace making. Armored in decorative garments, her subjects have a quiet power to them."

I love journaling what I learned in a day, however I've decided from here on out not to  journal what I've learned every single day. I believe in doing this, reflecting on what I've learned will be more of a fun hobby rather than somethings that's routine.
